| Celebrating Iron and Steel in Lithgow |
|
|
Ironfest is the celebration of the history of iron and steel in Lithgow. Ironfest re-enacts through music and dances, workshops and world jousting championship that rich history. Jousting is a mock battle where two horsemen, charging at each other with lances, attempt to unseat the other. Lithgow is small but it has a great heritage awaiting the curious visitor. Watch grown men dressed up as knights, ready for joustings and sword fights. Walk around the site of the Blast Furnace Ruins, view what remains of the furnace. Take a ride on the Zig Zag Railway, where the train will take you up the steep mountain and down to the valley below. Tour the Small Arms Museum, see what weapons are made in the local small arms factory. Take a trip out to Mount Wilson, tour the beautiful gardens and old houses, walk through the Cathedral of Ferns. To go to Lithgow and other sites you need to have strong knees, good walking shoes, and a love for ancient ruins. Warm clothes if you are visiting from the end of March, through the winter and early spring month. For bush walks take some water and something to munch. Bring maps. Some of the treks can be long.
