"All the Blood and All the Water" - The Play |
|
May 8 to May 17, 2008
“All the Blood and All the Water” is a play by Suzie Miller, one of Australia’s new blooming playwrights, which has for its theme the love between two best mates occurring in a melting pot environment, with its subliminal trappings of sex, mateship, culture differences and stereotypes, and with its subthemes of families in cross cultures and of human persons caught in vulnerable situations. “When is blood thicker than water? And which blood is your truth?” These are two questions that could stir your feelings as you watch this exciting play. Angel, 17, who loves hanging out at the beach and catching a wave, is jolted from his peace and quiet when he is made to choose between family, friends and the girl of his dreams. His dad is an Iraqi, a Muslim, and his mom a second generation Italian-Australian. Honey, the girl he is in love with, is an Anglo-Aussie. Ryder, Angel’s best mate through school, is also Anglo-Australian. The conflict comes when Ryder’s older brother Jax is released from prison. Angel is then made to choose between his two worlds, as an ‘Aussie’ or as a ‘Muzzo’. Faced with the prospect being betrayed, he must decide between his family---his blood and kin---and the social world he thought he belonged to, with friends of different cultures. Suzie Miller’s “All the Blood and All the Water” has won the Theatrelab/Inscription Holmes a’Court Award.
The cast includes Sean Barker, Fayssal Bazzi, Emily Brennan, Patrick Dickson, Johnny Nasser, Billie Rose Prichard and Will Snow. The play is directed by John Sheedy. The venue and the performance dates: Riverside Theatre, Corner Church and Market Streets, Parramatta, May 6–8, and May 12–15 at 11am. Price is $17 per student/additional teacher. Duration of the play is 90 minutes.

Renaissance Food at Your Library |
|
|
The glory and fame of the Renaissance Period are hot topics you could hear these days as you dine and wine at the Customs House Library! Be thrilled with what history has brought to our doorsteps: You would know for instance that in 1533, Ferdinand Magellan's ship returned to Spain without him, because he had perished in a battle with the natives in one of the smaller islands in the Philippines in 1521! However the sea routes that Magellan had discovered also opened the way to the importation of spices to the Old World and the great wealth that the trade had brought to those who had followed Magellan’s routes. Those spices are actually mixed in the food being served you as you wine and dine at your Library. Be informed about the gastronomic trends of the “Golden Age”—that’s the other name for the Renaissance. Listen to the Romans adventurousness that set the paths to further explorations of the world’s hinterlands. Know the influence of world politics, of kings and queens and their damsels, and of renowned theatres, over navigators as they moved over lands and seas seeking for bitter- and better-tasting spices. You will hear all these as you listen to the topic of Renaissance food. A free talk brought to you by the City of Sydney Library.
Here are the venues and the time: Customs House Library, 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay, 12 February 2008, 12.15pm - 1.30pm. Glebe Library, 186 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, 5 April 2008, at 1.30 pm - 2.45 pm.

Ku-Ring-Gai Garden Festival |
|
Ku-Ring-Gai Garden Festival
March 29-30, 2008
The Ku-Ring-Gai Garden Festival at St. Ives is a two-day cultural event that shouldn't be missed.
The variety of shows in Ku-Ring-Gai Garden Festival is impressive. If you're into music, you would love listening to the Sydney Welsh Choir perform their repertoire: from Bach to Bacharach, the group will sing quality popular songs in Welsh, Latin, and English.
The festival is also a good opportunity to try out the organic and preservative-free wines from Canowindra, specifically Toms Waterhole and Gardners Ground. These wines are mostly exported to Japan and Germany, but locals will get a taste of these in the garden festival.
Sierra Leone dancers will also display their culture through dance, with the use of drums, wooden xylophones, and various stringed instruments. Part of the proceeds of the festival will go to building a children's hospital in Sierra Leone.
For children's entertainment, the Ku-Ging-Rai festival has invited Griego the Great Magician yet again. With his trademark bow tie, moustache, and black eyepatch, Griego is an intriguing character, and his tricks will delight both old and young.
Kids enter free from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. They can also get free pony rides and participate in plaste painting activities.
Located 16km northwest of the Sydney Central Business District, St. Ives is a suburb on Sydney's Upper North Shore.

Opera Australia launches Arabella this week |
|
R. Strauss' Arabella at the Opera Australia
March 8-22, 2008 This week, Opera Australia is presenting a new production of Richard Strauss' Arabella. Directed by John Cox and conducted by Richard Hickox, the cast includes Emma Matthews, Peter Coleman-Wright, and Cheryl Barker in the title role. Performed in German with subtitles, Arabella is the story of the Waldner family: Their finances are bad, as the head of the family, a count, has squandered his fortune. They are thus unable to come up with a dowry for their two daughters, who are played by Cheryl Barker and Emma Matthews (Zdenka). While Arabella may seem like one woman's search for Mr. Wright, the story actually treads between elegant comedy and psychological drama. Strauss' music has glorious, silvery lines, but his characters are anything but romantic. It is said that casting a work such as Strauss’ is always challenging, but Opera Australia manages to pool together a brilliant ensemble who, it is expected, will do justice to the piece. The opera's running time is three hours and ten minutes, with two twenty-minute intervals. Contact Details:
