February 12 to 23
SOMA, Canada’s renowned adults-only puppet theater group, performs at the Sydney Opera House’s the Studio for a limited 10-show run.   Cabaret Decadanse recreates the steamy nightclub world where sensuality and sexuality are common and go hand in hand with vulgarity—it’s glamorous but bawdy fun. The three puppeteer-dancers Serge Deslauriers, Annemarie Panneton, and Enock Turcotte use masks, marionettes, and even socks to bring a cast of characters to life. These are Conrad the French transvestite, Kiko the Latin lover, and the criminally seductive Chica.  It’s a strange ballet played against haunting music, and it will surely be memorable to all theatergoers. You can’t help but ask, “Who is controlling whom?” The music will certainly captivate you. The soundtrack includes a wide range of genres, from pop to blues, jazz to Broadway. Gershwin’s “Summertime to Fever” and “Hard Day’s Night” and Pussy Tourette’s “I Think He’s Gay” will certainly bring back warm memories.

Founded in 1999 by Serge Deslauriers, Raynald Michaud, and Enock Turcotte, SOMA International has gone from the streets to the world’s stage, and performed in Canada, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore Scotland, Spain and Switzerland. Cabaret Decadanse runs from February 12 to  23 at the Studio at Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point. Full tickets are at $38, while concession is at $30. Preview fees range from $25 to $30.
