Nike AF1: 26 and still strong |
|
|
Nike's Air Force 1 (AF1) is an athletic shoe model named after the Air Force One, the plane that carries the president of the United States.
Sold in low, mid-, and high-top, the AF1 was created by Bruce Kilgore in 1982, only to be discontinued the following year. It was the first basketball shoe to use the Nike Air Technology.
In 1986, AF1 was re-released, this time with the modern Nike swoosh logo on the bottom back of the shoe. It became popular among inner-city youth, hip-hop artists, and streetball players. It even inspired a single, "Air Force Ones," a collaboration between rappers Nelly and the St. Lunatics.
This year, Nike selected 25 of its best AF1s and asked its residents in Baltimore, New York City, and Philadelphia to vote for their favorite model.
In Baltimore, people voted for the 2005 AF1, while in Philly, Mark Smith's 2003 AF1 was the winning choice. New York City voted for the 1993 AF1. Nike announced that it would be re-releasing the winning shoe exclusively in each city.
