Centennial Parklands- Australia's Heritage Filled Parks E-mail

Celebrate Australia's rich history, visit the Centennial Parklands, the name given to a group of heritage-filled parks consisting of Moore, Centennial, and Queens Parks.

Moore Park is the location of Sydney's largest sporting venues, Sydney Football Stadium and Sydney Cricket Ground.  It also houses the Hordern Pavilion, venue to multipurpose entertainment, E. S. Marks Athletic Ground, Moore Park Golf Course, tennis courts, and bowling greens. Sydney's first zoo was established here in 1879, until it was moved to Taronga in 1917.  Moore Park was originally a part of the 1,000 acres set aside for grazing and watering stock. Former Sydney Mayor Charles Moore fought for it to be dedicated as leisure area for the people of Sydney and suburbs. The park was named after him.

Centennial Park was originally a swampland known as Lachlan Swamps, but is now home to vast expanses of grass, ornamental plants, pines, and native forest. Federation Pavilion, site of the first proclamation of the Commonwealth of Australia on Jan. 1, 1901, is found at Centennial Park. It was dedicated in Jan. 1888 to celebrate the first 100 years of British settlement of Australia, hence it was named Centennial.

The Queens Parks, originally a part of Lachlan Swamps Water Reserve, is located 6 kilometres east of Sydney's central business district. Many of the houses in Queens Park date from the Victorian period.
