Most commonly there is a persistent low mood associated by feeling teary and sensitive. The person often loses interest in pleasurable activities they used to enjoy and their libido may decline. It’s almost as if they seem to get little or no pleasure from life and this causes them to withdraw. Sometimes there may be suicidal thoughts as they can see no reason to live and their thinking becomes distorted. Sometimes it is so hard to get through the day they get into a negative mind-set and just can’t think clearly. Some people feel they are being punished for something and deserve their plight. They can’t ever see things improving. They may feel they are a burden on others and this is when suicidal thoughts occur although not everyone that is depressed thinks of suicide. Often depressed people also suffer from anxiety. It can be for no apparent reason or in the form of panic attacks. These panic attacks can last for as long as an hour or two and occur several times a day. Symptoms are sweating, shaking, upset stomach and shortness of breath and they can be triggered by having to decide what to wear, going to work, attending social gatherings or just going to a football game. Often this leads to them avoiding situations.

A part of depression is loss of self-esteem and confidence. The person feels no longer in control of their life and life becomes more difficult. Everything is looked at in a negative way and people become more critical of themselves seeing their failures instead of successes. Some don’t even realise they are ill and they blame themselves for just not trying hard enough. Relatives and friends sometimes make it worse by saying such things as ‘pull up your socks’ or ‘get over it’. This makes the person feel much worse. Depression can also mean the person becomes unable to make decisions as easily and this becomes frustrating. Along with this come feelings of loss of motivation where the person may even expect failure or disappointment to the point where they cannot even get enough energy to start an activity. A difference in appetite is also common. It can be either a loss of appetite or an increased craving for sweet, rich foods which causes weight gain accompanied by a disturbance in sleep patterns. There are often difficulties getting to sleep, waking up frequently during the night or waking early in the morning. Others experience a need for excessive sleep. Accompanying this are low energy levels and a decline in memory and concentration as some parts of the brain are affected. There may be reduced blood flow or electrical activity in the frontal lobes which affect thinking and slow down activity. Often tasks requiring attention for any length of time become harder to do or people become absent minded further increasing feelings of inadequacy. Memory will soon come back though once the person is feeling better. Sufferers sometimes complain of body aches, headaches, chest pain or backache. Often sufferers say that they feel pain all over but are unable to describe it properly. These are known as somatic pains and can be accompanied by a slowing down of the auto nervous system function which also leads to constipation, dyspepsia and bloating. Other symptoms may be a lowered sex drive, impotence, cessation or slowing of menstrual periods. It is important to determine if the reasons behind all of the above are physical or due to depressive illness. Obviously tests need to be done to rule out physical causes. Once this occurs depression can then be treated. There are many natural remedies to assist in helping the person with depression or anxiety. A good natural practitioner will use natural supplements and meditation whilst assisting the person to remove underlying causes. However this is not an overnight happening, takes patience and persistence, a willingness of the person to follow instructions and take responsibility for their own health. |
